Our Mirena service offers expert insertion, replacement, and removal for women seeking a reliable, long-acting contraceptive or treatment for certain gynaecological conditions. In addition to providing effective contraception for up to five years, Mirena can help manage heavy or painful periods, relieve symptoms of endometriosis, and provide the progesterone component of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause. The Mirena intrauterine device works by releasing a small amount of levonorgestrel locally within the uterus — preventing pregnancy and, for many women, dramatically reducing or eliminating periods. Aftercare & Follow-Up
A 15-minute rest period follows insertion. A 6-week check confirms correct placement via thread check. Your GP discusses what to expect with bleeding and symptoms in the coming weeks.
Insertion
Cervical gel or local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort. The Mirena is passed through the cervix and placed in the uterine cavity — a procedure that typically takes 5–10 minutes.
Pre-Procedure Consultation
Your GP takes a gynaecological history, discusses your expectations, explains what the procedure involves, and answers all your questions. STI screening is arranged if appropriate.
